Catalogue Note

Very rare first, and only, issue of the journal that contains Marx's first major work and Engels' first work on economics. The Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher was founded by Marx and Arnold Ruge in reponse to the censorship and eventual closure of the Rheinische Zeitung. Its aim was, in Marx's words, to offer "relentless criticism of the existing world order." This double issue, the only one to be published, contains Marx's first major work ( the essay "Zur Kritik der Hegel'schen Rechtsphilosopie") and Engels' influential Umrisse zu einer Kritik der Nationalökonomie. Around 1000 copies of this double number were printed, but 800 were soon confiscated by the German police.
