Leading the selection of 20th-century works in this vibrant and diverse offering is Matta’s splendidMorphologie Psychologique, 1939. Other surrealists include Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Juan O´Gorman and Wifredo Lam. Composition Constructive, 1931 by Joaquín Torres-García complements later abstractions by Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz Diez, Mira Schendel, Alejandro Otero and Gego. Realism also makes a strong showing, with works by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Fernando Botero, Francisco Toledo, Dr. Atl, Angel Zárraga and Claiduo Bravo. Featured earlier works include one of Ferdinand Bellermann’s greatest masterpieces.
Sotheby’s 28 May sale of Latin American Art brought a total of $14,773,375. The evening was led by Joaquín Torres-García’s 1931 Composition Constructive, a recently discovered masterpiece from the father of Latin American abstraction that was sought by six buyers before comfortably exceeding the high estimate to sell for $1,445,000.
