This season’s Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale includes excellent examples from a wide variety of periods and styles. Highlights include Fernand Léger’s Nature morte au profil of 1928, a work whose striking palette and near-abstract imagery make it an important early example of the more liberated, organic style that characterised his best work in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Further Modern highlights include a delightful Chagall, a rare group of Modigliani works on paper from the collection of the artist’s doctor and important early supporter, Paul Alexandre, a fabulous Cubist still life by Maria Blanchard, as well as a wide range of high quality Picasso works on paper and a bold charcoal by Henri Matisse.
The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist section features a stunning Degas pastel of bathers on the shore and four beautiful landscapes by Pissarro, which offer fascinating insight into his evolving style and focus. The German and Austrian highlights include a jewel-coloured Kandinsky gouache from 1906, a beautifully serene Lehmbruck terracotta and some vibrant works on paper by Nolde.
The strong sculpture section features excellent examples by Brancusi, Miró, Moore, Arp and a rotating bronze by Hepworth. We are particularly honoured to be offering works from so many prestigious private collections, including an extraordinary group of Modern works from a Private Swedish Collection, property from the Collection of the Late Earl of Jersey, the Wallach Collection, as well as works from Tufts University, Massachusetts.
We hope you will enjoy browsing through this E-catalogue, and look forward to welcoming you to our London galleries from 31st January.
