This rich and varied sale contains major collections of historical papers, literary correspondence, fine first editions and highly accomplished original book illustrations from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries.
Highlights include the surviving archive of M.K Gandhi’s close friend Hermann Kallenbach, separate groups of papers relating to the Duke of Monmouth’s Rebellion of 1685 and to the government of Ireland in the eighteenth century, a document describing the treasures of Tipu Sultan’s palace at Seringapatam, a unique album of watercolours recording the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, a fine and rare series of letters by Jonathan Swift, a gold ring that belonged to Jane Austen and a fine set of Austen first editions, superb copies of the Shakespeare Fourth Folio (1685), Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) and the Kelmscott Chaucer (1896), the true first edition of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler (London, 1890), books from the distinguished library at Stobhall, an exceptionally fine series of wartime letters by Irwin Shaw, the dedication copy of Lewis Carroll’s The Nursery Alice, together with many fine original book illustrations by Beatrix Potter, E.H. Shepard, Edmund Dulac, and others.
