Monument to Léon Gambetta (1901-1905)
In 1900, a national subscription raises the funds for a monument to the memory of the lawyer and politician Léon Gambetta (1838-1882) for the city of Bordeaux (nowadays dismantled). Dalou wins the project and represents Gambetta full length, dressed in a frock-coat like a modern icon, on the top of a column and flanked on the lower register by groups of Wisedom supporting Liberty and Defense of Homeland. In July 1901, Dalou begins with the first group and has just enough time to start working on the second one before his death. The monument would be completed by two of his practitioners Auguste Becker and Auguste Biaggi.
