“Drawing is a way of thinking…it’s very direct, but not specific. My real thinking is visual…Making a series of visual connections is a particular idea, there’s no beginning or end. I start out, with a formal structure - couplets or whatever. Then I take it from there. It’s about joining things up, making relationships, but at the same time letting the drawing itself do the work. One of the things about [the Cold Mountain work] is, it’s more directly involved in the act of drawing and the automatic. [The works] start out with observation and then automatic reaction, and then back off, so there’s layering of different ways of drawing…”
