A Meissen chinoiserie cup and saucer
circa 1774-1814
of classical shape, the terminal of the rectangular handle as a moulded accanthus leaf decorated with a continuous landscape of chinamen attending a tea ceremony, a seated man raising a cup and candle, the scene surrounded by vegetation and architectural follies all in soft grey, light and dark brown camaieu and gold against a pink ground, the lozenge border enclosed by pear and circular motifs, the saucer with similar decoration, the well with a spray of flowers and the word 'salut'

Loosely based on the Schulz codex, the scenes and figures on the cup and saucer seem a classical interpreation of gilt chinoiserie scenes found on Meissen and Hausmaler porcelain objects of the earlier 18th century.
