The finely painted miniature with Christ and the Disciples on the Way to Emmaus is a reversed version of a signed and dated print by Philips Galle from 1571, a Dutch publisher, best known for publishing old master prints, which he also produced as designer and engraver; Galle mentions Pieter Bruegel the Elder as the inventor of the composition (New Hollstein, Dutch & Flemish, 173.I, Philips Galle; New Hollstein, Dutch & Flemish, 6.I, Pieter Bruegel the Elder; Lebeer 1969, 85).
