Marshall Wood exhibited his Daphne to acclaim at the 1862 International Exhibition in London. A native of Manchester, Wood exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1875, and later spent time in New York. He created portrait busts and statues of members of the royal family, including statues of Queen Victoria for Sydney, Melbourne, Montrael and Ottawa. A large size version of the Daphne (measuring 160cm) is in the garden of the Bendigo Art Gallery, Victoria, and another was sold in these rooms on 16 December 2015, lot 19.
