An enigmatic object, Man Ray may have intended that the meaning of Maison Close to be left to the viewer's own interpretation. The title in French means a brothel. The unique object in painted cardboard resembles an enclosed construction, fastened with leather cord. It is notable that some of Man Ray's most famous objects are bound with string or cord, such as the 1920 L'Enigme d'Isidore Ducasse (a sewing machine wrapped in a blanket and tied with string) and Torse, later referred to as Vénus restaurée, of 1936 (a plaster cast of the Venus de' Medici bound with rope).
