The present work was originally in the collection of M. Georges Bauquier. An aspiring artist himself, Bauquier entered Léger’s atelier as a student in 1936 and over the years become the great artist’s friend and closest collaborator. Bauquier dedicated his life to collecting and promoting the works of Léger and produced the seminal Catalogue raisonnés of the artist’s oils. After Léger’s death in 1955, Bauquier and the artist’s widow Nadia Léger devoted themselves to the construction of Musée National Fernand Léger in Biot, in south-eastern France, built to commemorate the life and exhibit the works of Fernand Léger. The exterior of the museum is decorated in mosaics executed by Heidi Melano after drawings by Fernand Léger. A document signed by Bauquier’s wife Simone, confirms that the present work too was executed by Heidi Melano.
