Together with Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Bart van der Leck, Georges Vantongerloo was one of the founding members of the De Stijl group in 1917 and as such was a major contributor to the development of abstract art in the early 20th century.
He worked particularly closely alongside Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Like them, Vantongerloo used a limited and carefully selected repertoire of forms and colours, but in comparison to Mondrian and Doesburg, Vantongerloo did not limit himself to lines and primary colours but also used other forms such as circles and curved lines as well as mixed colours.
The present work was formerly in the collection of Vantongerloo’s fellow artist and close friend Max Bill; together they shared an extraordinarily diverse range of interests including fine art, design, architecture and philosophy. Today, the Georges Vantongerloo Stiftung is housed in the Max Bill House in Zumikon, Zurich.
