Executed in 1966, Etude pour Filles au bord de l'eau features several key motifs which had become core elements of Delvaux's Surrealistic language by this stage of his career, including the incorporation of mirrors into the composition and the presence of both clothed and nude female figures. The juxtaposition of an interior with the external world, one of Delvaux's most significant recurring concepts, imbues the scene with a curiously dream-like quality. The present work is a study for the celebrated oil Filles au bord de l'eau, which is being offered as part of Sotheby's Surrealist Art Evening Sale on 1st March 2017.
