Alongside the previous lot, Scylla et Charybde forms part of a series of works Dalí completed in 1970 illustrating episodes from Homer’s Odyssey. Attempting to complete the voyage home, Odysseus’ ship must pass through a strait dominated by two sea-monsters, the six-headed Scylla and the terrifying Charybdis, who swallows up entire vessels whole. Since the two were located so close to each other, it was considered impossible to avoid one without facing destruction by the other. Confronted with this desperate dilemma, Odysseus chooses to do battle with Scylla and succeeds in emerging relatively unscathed from the encounter.
