Gustave Doré (1832-1883) is one of the major artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration, creating monumental designs for the “Holy Bible”, Dante’s “Inferno” and Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, among others. He is a master of design, color and composition. His designs for Perrault’s Fairy Tales were so popular than he exhibited these same designs as oil paintings on canvas; “Puss-in-Boots” is perhaps his best known image from this series.
