Georges Gardet is the most talented and interesting animalier sculptor of his generation after Barye. Althought his models are inspired by his master Frémiet and Barye, he took an original approach to the genre, breaking new ground with a bold use of different materials, like the use of colored marbles, crystal and onyx (See: Sotheby's London June 28, 2008 lot 48). His subjects tend toward romantic depictions of wild animals as well as  large game animals in powerful forms as in the present group. Gardet trained, like Carpeaux, at the École des Arts Décoratifs rather than at the École des Beaux-Arts.
