the translucent even white stone carved with a mandarin-duck standing on an upturned lotus pad, grasping a sprig of lotus in its beak with further openwork sprigs encircling its body, the concave base pierced with two pairs of holes

A related carving depicting a mandarin duck, in the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, was included in the exhibition Jades from China, Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, 1994, cat. no. 305; and another, from the McElney collection, was included in the exhibition Chinese Jade. Stone for the Emperors, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, 1986, cat. no. 73, where it is written a very similar piece was found in the Wanli emperor's tomb (p. 140).
