A 'BUFFALO' INKSTONE
MING / QING DYNASTY

carved in the form of a recumbent buffalo in relief with an irregular recessed well in the centre, its head turning to the left and clenching a sprig of lingzhi in its mouth, incised with a radiating tuft between the ribbed flat horns curving back towards the folds of skin at the nape, its bushy tail tucked to the muscular haunch, the underside later inscribed with the characters huai yuan ('embracing great distance'), bingzi si yue Lifan ('by Lifan in the 4th month of the bingzi year'), followed by the seal Ren, wood stand

It is very possible that the inscription on the base was by Ren Yu (1854-1901), hao Zi Lifan, a renowned Shanghai School painter.  The bingzi year inscription would therefore correspond with the year 1876.
