Probably Prince Stanislas-Auguste of Poland (1732–98), Royal Palace, Warsaw; Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 23 January 2003, lot 228; Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 28 January 2011, lot 14; Where acquired by the present owner.
A native of Naples, Palumbo received his first artistic training under Giovanni Battista Caracciolo (1578–1635) and later under Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1656), during her sojourn in that city.
We are grateful to Prof. Nicola Spinosa for identifying this as a work by Palumbo, on the basis of photographs.
The canvas has recently been relined, cleaned and restored. There is an old, vertical crease or fold down the centre of the painting. The picture is in reasonably good overall condition. There is an old, vertical repaired tear approx 25 cm. in her leg, and another smaller of 6 cm. in the upper left corner. There are a series of scattered, old repaired damages, none greater than 2 x 2 cm. scattered mostly on the left, two bottom corners, and the background; and some more general areas of strengthening around the top of her robe, around her proper right hand, to the background behind her, and along the upper margin. The restoration has been reasonably well carried out and the picture is not in need of immediate attention. Offered in a parcel gilt frame with egg and dart and lamb’s tongue moulding in good condition.
