The drama professor Daniel Labeille produced the world premiere of Samuel Beckett’s  Rockaby at the State University of New York in Buffalo, New York on 8 April 1981 (see previous lot). The play was written in response to a personal request from Daniel Labeille in a letter of March 1980 that Beckett consider writing an original piece for the occasion. "Beckett replied 'A new piece for the occasion if I possibly can. I doubt it.' Yet, in spite of his doubts, by the beginning of August, a very beautiful short play, Rockaby, had emerged..." (James Knowlson, Damned to Fame. The Life of Samuel Beckett).
