A Pair of George III style white-painted and parcel-gilt torchères in the style of Mayhew and Ince
each circular top with a gadrooned molded edge above a fluted frieze with lambrequin apron centering an acorn hanging knop, the fluted downswept supports with monied molding joined by a platform strecher mounted with drapery swags and surmounted by a flaming urn and ending in Greek-key form feet.
height 4 ft. 6 in.; diameter of top 10 1/2 in.; width of base 24 1/4 in.

The lambrequin aprons of these torchères are similar to those of a pair of pier tables at Broadlands, a Mayhew and Ince commission, see Hugh Roberts, 'The Ince and Mayhew Connection - Furniture at Broadlands - I,' Country Life, January 29, 1981, p. 289, fig. 1 and fig. 8 (detail of lambrequin).

 

A similar pair of George III giltwood and gilt-composition tripod torcheres possibly supplied to the 11th Viscount Kilmorey, Mourne Park, Kilkeel, Co. Down, Ireland, was sold Christie's, London, July 7. 1994, lot 156.  Of related form and decoration, they also have fluted tops, drapery-swagged tiers and flaring legs ending in Greek key feet.
