These  two pairs of candlesticks (lots 119 and 120) were commissioned by the Duchess of Cadaval  to Diego Giacometti circa 1976-1977,  for her summer house in Portugal.
Mrs de Cadaval met Diego Giacometti through Hubert de Givenchy, one of her close friend. She asked Diego to create candle holders, he replied several months later  : "Your candle holders are ready, I created candlesticks with toads that you can take off and use on their own, if you prefer ".
It is the only known set of four candlesticks with three toads as  independent sculptures, that can be either set freely on the base of the candlestick or on the table. Sotheby's sold a similar candlestick with two toads on May 24, 2016.
