《讓我留在黑暗裡》尺幅宏大,畫面靜謐無聲、神秘深邃,是劉野2008年的詩意鉅作。2000年代初,劉野的三幅紅色系列大尺幅作品奠定了他的敘事風格,也高踞拍賣紀錄的前兩位元,並收於M+這樣重要的博物館典藏。這次上拍的《讓我留在黑暗裡》乃除以上三幅紅色系列作品之外唯一一幅大尺幅人物鉅作。比起另外三幅,《讓我留在黑暗裡》風格截然不同。劉野以前筆下的世界,有勇敢探險的小海軍,有拒絕開口的兔子,有神秘的洛麗塔一般的小女孩,明豔純粹的色彩,充滿著童話一樣的氛圍。2000年代末,劉野減少創作數量,專心磨礪自己的標誌性繪畫技法,淬煉轉化成彌漫在灰藍色背景中的風雪,飛雪之中煢煢孑立的是略含輕愁的女子,仿佛淩寒獨自盛開的一支梅花,是美的象徵也是劉野的自喻。劉野隨後在2009和2010年兩度回歸這個主題,完成了兩幅尺寸較小的作品,畫中皆是同一個披著頭巾、身穿灰色大衣、格子長褲並拖著行李箱的女孩。今次上拍的開山之作,是唯一規模龐大的一幅,迷人的畫作滿佈矛盾:首先,藝術家在刻板的幾何框架裡使用筆直的角度,然而作品卻顯現出柔軟的廣闊深度;其次,儘管尺寸之大足以讓人感覺置身其中,作品依然充盈著讓人捉摸不定的無重感;而且,即使畫面荒涼疏簡,幾乎完全沒有故事背景,它卻出乎意料地浮現出濃厚的敘事氛圍,予人想像餘地。本作並未刻意強調具象或幾何抽象,但兩者的結合渾然一體,再糅合寫實主義、後現代挪用和中西藝術的主要技法,煉成散發雋永詩意的獨特佳作。

劉野生於1964年,先後就讀於北京工藝美術學校、中央美术学院和德國柏林藝術大學。他在歐洲留學期間深受各種藝術啟發,遠至文藝復興早期,尤其是揚・凡・埃克,「他的畫作尺幅精巧,卻張力十足」(藝術家本人,引述自〈劉野與田霏宇對話〉,載於Christoph Noe編,《劉野作品全集1991-2015》,德國,2015年,頁45),近至約翰尼斯・維梅爾、喬治・莫蘭迪、巴爾蒂斯、喬治・德・基里科、皮耶・蒙德里安、保羅・克利和雷內・馬格利特等。劉野消化一眾藝術風格和技法,不斷磨礪技巧,淬煉出自成一家的超現實美學,以朱朱的話,就是落在法蘭德斯靜物畫「Stilleven」(平衡與安靜的世界)和普普藝術之間的風格。朱朱評道,劉野從法蘭德斯畫家身上感受到「超越時間和地域的語言魅力」,而普普藝術對他的影響「見於他把藝術史上的圖像作為現成物,挪用並置於自己的作品中,因此他的創作生涯裡有很多作品 [……] 都可被視為是與心愛藝術家從未間斷的秘密對話」(朱朱著,〈只有一克重〉,載於Christoph Noe編,《劉野作品全集1991-2015》,德國,2015年,頁17)。

本作完成於2000年代末,體現了劉野在人像畫方面細微但關鍵的蛻變。他在九十年代經常繪畫胖乎乎的小孩,千禧年的降臨迎來了一個耐人尋味的變化,他筆下出現更多女性,而且大多流露情色意味。朱朱認為,劉野作品中的性暗示就如巴爾蒂斯一樣,是慾望的昇華,又或者是「為了回應表面的需求」(同上,頁26)。朱朱繼續闡釋人體如何「成為觸發視覺和美學癡迷的載體,為他的凝視提供焦點和熱度。除了素材的改變,他對法蘭德斯畫家的靜物畫『Stilleven』有了全新認知。維梅爾的魅力再次有如黑暗中的明珠,散發出穿透迷霧的瑩瑩亮光」(同上)。直至2000年代末,露骨的性含意逐漸消失;朱朱寫道,來到《讓我留在黑暗裡》的時候,「畫中的女孩緊緊裹著一襲灰色大衣」(同上)。在摒棄令人震驚的情色元素的同時,劉野使自己的美學風格變得更加溫柔,他把敘事從作品中抽離,卻出人意表地保留了強烈的戲劇氛圍。朱朱分析道:「他的圖畫形式變得簡約、內斂 [……] 畫面集中在一至兩個人物身上,後面是幾近單色的大片色彩。這種簡潔的背景,分別受到蒙德里安抽象畫和傳統中式山水留白的影響」(同上)。

今次上拍的畫作作於2008年,時值「雪景」和「竹子」系列的誕生,因此帶有劉野一貫含蓄的幾何特色。畫面中央是女子大衣形成的梯形,周圍伴隨著幾乎呈完美長方形的雙臂、雙腿和行李箱。直線與鋪滿雪花的地平線互成垂角,只有女子披著頭巾的橢圓頭部曲線打破規律,精心設計的對稱也被優雅偏分的黑色瀏海兀然擾亂。劉野早年創作深受蒙德里安的幾何抽象影響,到了2000年代,他進一步內化並同化蒙德里安對視覺理論的重視,對空間進行嚴格的勾劃、分割和區隔。藝術家本人表示:「蒙德里安的畫出現在我的畫中是精神上的。他的畫那麼單純──最基本的顏色和垂直水平線,我也想解决單純的問題。」劉野的作品雖然被歸類為非抽象藝術,他卻運用具象事物的幾何外形作為抽象線條和形態,縱橫交錯地搭建出包含精準平衡和一致性的構圖。其作品因而充滿難以解釋的張力,在畫布四邊之內交相角力,達至遊走於靜止與活動之間的協調與平衡。本作靜謐動人,興味與日俱增,勾起觀者無限的好奇心,並提出關於美學的探詢,喚起我們內心的秘密幻想世界。
