Roberts made a short visit to Morocco from Gibraltar in March 1833 and he enthused in a letter home that ‘Here indeed I am in a New World.' ... it would be unpardonable for me to leave a country now I am here of which so little is known and I have opportunities of making studies that none but myself has ever had' (Letter from Roberts to David Ramsay Hay from Tangiers, 29 March 1833, National Library of Scotland).
As well as visiting Tangiers, Roberts spent eight days exploring the Mediterranean port of Tétouan. There he stayed in the Jewish quarter with the Cohen family and Mr Cohen acted as his guide and interpreter.
