The work of Dora García incorporates performance, text and installation. The relationship between artist, artwork and viewer is pivotal to her conceptual oeuvre. Garcia utilises a wide variety of media including drawing, photography, site-specific installation, performance, video, sound, net.art and text. She often works in the public space as with the ambitious project Inserts in real time (2001), a series of ten performances in which actors execute her instructions in 'real time'. Language plays an important role as a specific means of communication and as a coded system of signs. The impossibility of clear communication is often the starting point. The artist also draws inspiration from literature. Garcia's predominant interest lies in creating a situation or context that alters the traditional relations between artist, artwork and viewer. Her work is the product of an attempt to understand how an artwork is made, and how it relates to the audience. Garcia has also created a variety of works for the Internet since 1999 (doragarcia.net).

Dora García was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 1989-1991.
She won the Uriôt Prize (NL) in 1990.
