Condition

The canvas has been strip-lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher which appears to be of the period. There is a very minor surface scratch in the ground between the standing figures; however, this is not distracting to the naked eye. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals some intermittent strokes of cosmetic retouching along the right framing edge and in the upper part of the left framing edge. Otherwise, the main composition appears to be untouched. This work is in good condition and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with minor losses. Colours are somewhat brighter than in the printed catalogue.

The ornate stone carving depicted in the background is typical of the Mamluk period. Executed in a variety of patterns, including arabesques and geometrical designs, it is reminiscent of the façade of the madrasa of Mamluk Amir Khayrbak in Cairo.
