J.M.H. Lewis, John Frederick Lewis R.A. 1805-1876, Leigh-on-Sea, F. Lewis Publishers Ltd, 1978, cat. no. 431 as ‘An Arab Manservant’

Condition

The pigment has been applied thickly to the paper and as a result there are numerous lines and cracks visible on the surface (upon very close inspection). At the right hand edge the paper has been lost, this is hidden by the current frame. Overall the image remains strong and easily readable.

拍品資料及來源

This image was originally an unfinished oil sketch on paper. It seems that it was subsequently cut to an oval, pasted down on a fragment of a Charles Roberson & Co. proprietary prepared wooden panel as backing, and a background roughly painted in with white gouache. It has been framed to simulate a keepsake portrait miniature. The head is very similar to that of the principal figure in In the Bezestein, El Khan Khalil, Cairo (oil, 1860, sold Sotheby’s 20 November 1996, lot 251), and, like that principal figure, it may relate to a now lost photograph of Lewis, similar to two known photographs of him in Ottoman Dress from the 1860s (Private Collection and Royal Watercolour Society, London).

We are grateful to Briony Llewellyn and Charles Newson for their help in cataloguing this lot.
