Condition

The paper has darkened a little with time. The sheet is laid down, and as a result the surface has been disrupted. This can only be seen in a raking light.

Roberts looks from the south-east across the Valley of Jehoshaphat towards the Temple Mount. On the left the Al-Aqsa Mosque can be seen, while dominating the composition is the Dome of the Rock. On the right stands a minaret, likely to be that of the Al-Marwani Mosque, while below the city's eastern wall, Absalom’s Tomb is just visible.

This work was probably executed 'on-the-spot' and is considered to be the preliminary drawing for the ‘finished’ watercolour that Roberts created once back in England which was lithographed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land

We are very grateful to Briony Llewellyn for her help when cataloguing this lot.
