This work is one of the preparatory sketches for the grand painting showing The preparation of the fireworks display and the decoration for the feast at Piazza Navona in Rome in celebration of the birth of the Dauphin, signed and dated 1729, at the Musée du Louvre (oil on canvas, 110 x 250 cm; inv. no. 415/1410). The present work shows a segment from the lower right corner with a cortège of elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen, and dogs in the foreground. The Dauphin (1729-1765) was the son of Louis XV and of Marie Leczinska. His birth, the 4th of September 1729, was celebrated in Rome with feasts organized by cardinal Melchior de Polignac, ambassador to France at the Holy See. Another sketch is preserved in the Art Institute, Chicago (oil on canvas, 26,8 x 45 cm; inv. no. 33.914; see F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del'700, Rome 1986, p. 330, nos. 198 and 199, reproduced).
