  • 60 cm; 23 5/8 in.

Condition

Surface dirt overall, notably in the crevices, consistent with age and handling. There are a few chips to the high points in some places and along the edges of the base. There are two losses to the drapery on the Virgin's cloack, at her proper left knee level, another one to the base just below and a few small looses to the Christ's crown. A restored break is visible to the back of the base. Christ's head with a restored break and a joint visible to his neck. Some toes are partly missing to his proper left foot. Natural grey veining and inclusions are visible in some places, consistent with the material. Wear to the polychromy and to the gilding. Otherwise in overall quite good condition.

Characteristic of Sicilian sculpture, this Virgin was carved after the model of a 14th century Madonna and Child, by Nino Pisano (Church of the Madonna, Trapani). A comparable ivory example is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. 984-1907), and an alabaster with similar lavishly gilt ornaments, is in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, Barcelona (inv. no. 131161-000).
