L'Ongaro is known for his marble dragons on the Doge Giovanni Pesaro's funerary monument (circa 1665-69, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari). He collaborated mainly with the architect Baldassare Longhena, notably in Santa Maria della Salute. Circa 1674, he discovered the works of Josse de Court, in Padoua. This bust is part of Ongaro's continuity, notably with the expressive wrinkles of the face, the alternating smooth and unpolished areas and the use of the drilling bit for the darker shadows.
