The actual painting is less dark and shows more contrast than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The painting is on a canvas that has been relined, seemingly an older one, dating from the first half of the 20th Century. The painted surface seems to be in a good condition, with the colours and impastos of the paint nicely preserved. Some minor thinness can be observed in the darker (the browns-blacks) areas of the composition. The painted surface is covered with a dense and strong craquelure pattern. The varnish layer is old, dirty and discoloured and the painting would benefit from cleaning. Minor discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout. Under UV The old varnish layer fluoresces completely, showing only some minor surface dirt in the woman on the left. Offered with an ornate carved and giltwood frame.
