Anonymous sale, Paris, Thierry de Maigret, 7 December 2012, lot 42.
An old number is inscribed on the reverse of the canvas: 1325.C.
This composition repeats the famous composition by Caravaggio at the Musei Capitolini in Rome (129 x 95 cm, inv. no. PC 239). The earliest records of a 'A painting of Saint John the Baptist with his Lamb by the hand of Caravaggio together with its gilt frame decorated with arabesques' is from the testament of Giovanni Battista Mattei, made in Rome on December 4, 1616 (see S. Guarino, in exhibition catalogue Paris, Musée Jacquemart-André, Caravage à Rome. Amis et Ennemis, 2018, pp. 118-119, under cat. no. 11).
To the naked eye
The canvas has been relined (old glue relining?) The painted surface appears to be in a good condition with some thinness visible in the dark background behind the figure on the right, upper right, lower right and also upper left. Some thinness appears also in the middle part of the figure’s body. No major damages seem to be apparent. The painted surface is covered with a dense craquelure pattern.
Under the UV light
The varnish layer fluoresces almost completely.
A small repaired damage is visible at 5 cm from the right top edge, another one to the right of the ram’s head. We notice some old retouching in the face, in the arm, and the body of Saint John, and another possible repaired old tear or rupture lower right below the lower leg of the figure.
Offered with an Italian carved and giltwood frame (possibly old), some chips and damages.
