The actual painting is more tonal and contrastful than the catalog would suggest. The canvas has been relined (glue). The painting seems to be nicely preserved. An old repaired tear is visible near the right edge in the center at ca. 3 cm to the left of the woman with a red veil. A small paint loss lower left, at ca. 1 cm below tree trunk, another small paint loss can be observed near the child sitting on her mother leg in the right corner. Some rather crude retouchings are visible in the tree area upper right. Some retouched paint losses are visible around the edges and some retouchings are visible in the sky area and scattered throughout. Some thinness can be seen in the darker parts of the composition. The painted surface is covered with a fine craquelure pattern. The varnish layer is dirty and discolored, and shows some surface dirt. Under the UV light The varnish layer fluoresces largely, showing minor surface dirt and scattered retouchings throughout. Offered with a gold painted wooden frame.

This composition derives from a print by Hans (or Jan) Collaert the Elder, dated 1555, after Lambert Lombard (Hollstein no. 23), leaving out some figural groups like that of God the Father in the central sky area. Some figures are based on those of Raphael's cartoons for the tapestry series 'Acts of the Apostles' and those for the 'Scuola Nuova'.
