Beloved at the beginning of his reign, Ferdinand II reorganized his government and promoted the industrialization of his Kingdom. He had, however, to face the opposition of the Liberals and the first revolutionary riots that lead to the 1848 crisis and the rising of the Independentists. A long period of repression followed, forcing European leaders to take sides with Victor Emmanuel II. Ferdinand was disgraced and then wounded by one of his soldiers, on 8 December 1856.  A student of Valerio Villareale in Palermo and Pietro Tenerani in Rome, La Barbera portrayed the Bourbon family several times, including busts of Francisco II, son of Ferdinand II, and his wife, Maria Sofia Wittelsbach (Royal Palace of Caserta). At the fall of the Kingdom of the Two-Sicilys, the sculptor moved to Paris where he was first documented circa 1865 and last mentioned at the 1867 Salon, where he exhibited a bust.
