Joos van Cleve, one of the most important painters in Flanders of his time, created numerous religious compositions. Among them, a Salvator Mundi of which he painted several different versions (for example, the Christ as Salvator Mundi1 and Christ the Saviour2) and which was imitated and repeated on many occasions by artists' workshops throughout northern Europe, for example Hans Memling3 (ca. 1435-1494) or Jan van Eyck (1390-1441).

Depicted as the Saviour of the World, Christ is shown full face, holding an orb in his left hand and raising his right hand in blessing.
