Alice Bailly was the first and only female Swiss artist to contribute to the Salons in Paris praised by Apollinaire. Her first solo exhibition in 1913 positioned her as an influential member of the French Avant-garde. Music has always been very important in her personal life and and is a recurring theme in her oeuvre. Portraying Maria de Senger playing piano in a colourful cubist painting, Etude pour Sonate à Dukas translates the gesture of the pianist in an animated composition deeply influenced by futurism. This work was executed in Geneva in 1918 and is one of the most powerful examples of Alice Bailly’s œuvre.
