  • Portrait lithographié par Gottfried Engelmann (1833) d’après Pierre-Roche Vigneron, (330 x 260 mm), encadré sous verre (465 x 395 mm).
Beau et grand portrait de Chopin, signé et dédicacé par le compositeur à Louis Mortier de Fontaine. Envoi autographe signé en polonais à Louis Mortier de Fontaine, à l’encre brune, en bas à droite :“Kochanemu Ludwikowi M.d. Fontainowi / Paryż 10/4 34. FF Chopin”. Les portraits gravés dédicacés par Chopin sont très rares sur le marché et sont antérieurs à l’ère de la photographie. Le seul autre exemple passé en vente aux enchères est une autre copie exécutée par le lithographe Engelmann (Sotheby’s Londres, 8 décembre 2000, lot 37). Le dédicataire serait le pianiste franco-polonais Louis Mortier de Fontaine (1816-1883), né à Wiśniowiec (aujourd’hui en Ukraine) et ayant vécu à Paris de 1833 à 1837. Elève de Josef Elsner, comme Chopin, il est devenu un ami de Franz Liszt, qui lui dédia certaines transcriptions des marches de Schubert (LWV A123 ; R251). Une lettre de Chopin à Mortier de Fontaine est conservée à la bibliothèque de la Royal Society of Musicians à Londres. Datée du 28 avril [1840], cette lettre est écrite en français et en polonais (voir P. Willis, Chopin in Britain. Chopin’s visits to England and Scotland in 1837 and 1848, University of Durham thesis, 2009, volume 2, p. 349). Légèrement et uniformément bruni.
