描述

  • Venice, a view of the Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge, seen from the North
  • oil on canvas
  • 14 1/2  by 21 7/8  in.; 36.7 by 55.5 cm.

Condition

The canvas has appear to be lined and is stable on its stretcher. The paint surface is stable and reads well beneath a clear varnish, with some areas of good retention of detail, for example in the architecture at far left, which still preserves some of its original impasto. The painting has been slightly pressed in some areas, likely from the relining process, for example in the upper right corner, although this is not too distracting. Inspection under UV reveals small scattered pin dots of retouching, likely to address the aforementioned slight pressing, and some of which are faintly visible to the naked eye. There are some additional more concentrated spots of retouching and strengthening primarily in the darker pigments, for example, in the moored boat left of center, and in the shadows of the boat at center and the two in the lower right foreground. A few other small and scattered retouches visible here and there throughout, for example a spot in the upper right and one in the upper left of the background, and possible some attention to strengthen scattered details of the architecture. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame with a more decoratively carved liner.
