Condition

The canvas is lined. An elaborate scene reads well with the figures on the foreground, especially the lady that's reclining, beautifully preserved. The colors on the canvas remain bright, as seen on the blue, red, and white hues. Inspection under UV shows some thinly applied lines of retouching scattered on the hair and cheek of Bacchus, as well as on the upper part of his arm at left. Along the edges there are some scattered spots of retouching, with a more concentrated area at top center along the far right edge, and another at upper center along the top edge, which extends down towards the leaves and branches. The figures in the background have some scattered spots of retouching, meanwhile the putti on the trees have very little and minor tiny dots of retouching here and there. Painting is in good condition and can hang in its present state. Offered in a giltwood frame with an ornate decoration at top center and inner lining.

拍品資料及來源

François Marot was born in Paris to a Dutch family of designers and artists. In 1699 Marot joined the Royal Academy in Paris and first exhibited his works at the Salon of 1704. This painting, which dramatically depicts a scene from Greek mythology, was inspired by the compositions of artists such as Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Titian. We are grateful to Clémentine Gustin-Gomez for suggesting the attribution on the basis of photographs.
