François Marot was born in Paris to a Dutch family of designers and artists. In 1699 Marot joined the Royal Academy in Paris and first exhibited his works at the Salon of 1704. This painting, which dramatically depicts a scene from Greek mythology, was inspired by the compositions of artists such as Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Titian. We are grateful to Clémentine Gustin-Gomez for suggesting the attribution on the basis of photographs.
