  • Landscape with Saint John the Baptist Preaching
  • oil on canvas
  • 53 by 41 in.; 134.6 by 104.1 cm.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and is flat and stable. Overall the painting is in good condition and the colors remain bright. There is a thick, shiny varnish and the paint layer remains thick and stable beneath it. There is a craqueleure pattern throughout though it is not distracting and is mainly visible in the lighter area of the sky on the left side. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching throughout the painting, though it is mostly concentrated along the edges and in the sky. The small, minor repaint in the trees and foreground generally avoid the figures. Offered in a carved and painted giltwood frame.

Domenico Zampieri, called "Domenichino" was one of the most important artists working in Rome at the beginning of the 17th century.  Trained by Annibale Carracci in Bologna, Domenichino left for Rome in 1609 and fully established himself as an independent master with his fresco series at San Luigi dei Francesco, in 1614-15.  While he was highly regarded for his religious works and large-scale frescoes, his landscapes were perhaps his most influential works for the generations of artists to follow him, including both Claude and Poussin.
