This bronze figure of Bacchus appears to be an adaptation of the classical marble group of a satyr with a panther in the Villa Albani, Rome. Previously attributed by Planiscig to Francesco da Sant'Agata and by Weihrauch to a late sixteenth century Florentine workshop working under the influence of Cellini, this bronze has since firmly been ascribed to Barthélemy Prieur by Mariake Bückling and Regina Seelig-Teuwen.  Related casts of this composition are known including examples in the Bayeriches Nationalmuseum, Munich, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Robert H. Smith Collection, Washington, D.C.
