His estate sale, Sotheby's, New York, November 22, 1998, lot 108

Condition

Some standard casting flaws. Original lead fill on back of proper left shoulder. Hooks originally set into his back. Lacking proper right hand (due to casting) and heel of proper right foot. Golden brown patina beneath black lacquer. Cast is rougher on the reverse than on the obverse, but it is a good, decorative old bronze bronze.

Several variants of this Renaissance bronze, copied after the Antique, exist in museums including the Jacquemart André, Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Widely attributed to Camelio by early scholars, Warren (op.cit., p. 268) questions the attribution of this group of Hercules statuettes to Camelio, and instead ascribes a different cast of Hercules in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford to that sculptor.
