Condition

The canvas has been relined and is flat and stable. The work appears vibrant and fresh, with an even, clear varnish. The details are well-preserved and colors retain their lovely jewel tones. Ultraviolet light reveals very fine, detailed retouchings throughout the composition, but none are large or visible to the naked eye. The painting has been restored very nicely and is ready to hang as is. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.

拍品資料及來源

The present painting, published as Valentin by both Longhi and Cuzin (see Literature) is one of a number of versions of the composition, others being in a private collection, New York (formerly in the collection of Carlasten Guntreb, Germany), the Musée du Périgord, the Volpe Collection, Bologna, and sold Monte Carlo, Sotheby's, 20-22 February 1988, lot 17.  Scholars agree that the composition would date from early in Valentin's career, when he had first moved to Rome and was working under Simon Vouet, circa 1620-25.
