Condition

The slate support is flat and intact. Minor scratches to the support are visible, especially along the four edges, probably due to past frame abrasion. The paint surface is well preserved and the image reads well against the dark background. Small losses are visible to the naked eye at Jesus's right hip, on his right lower leg and near his feet. Under UV inspection, scratches and losses fluoresce differently but no retouching can be seen due to the support and what appears to be an old varnish. Offered unframed.

拍品資料及來源

Artists from Verona pioneered the use of slate as a support in the 16th century and  exploited its smooth surface to render precise figures. The stone's dark color also allowed for dramatic chiaroscuro; in the present lot Christ appears to emerge from a black void, which fits with the intimate devotional function of this work. Despite the small size of Christ's body, the artist has delineated drops of blood and sweat to create a highly naturalistic and emotional image.
