Condition

The canvas has been recently relined. The paint surface is stable and a bold, decorative image reads well. Craquelure is present throughout and stable, and is most pronounced in the area of the figures. Under UV inspection, minor retouching is visible along all 4 edges of the painting to address frame abrasion, as well as very small, finely applied retouches in the edges of shadows on a few figures at left. The painting can hang as is. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.

拍品資料及來源

This canvas functioned as a bozzetto for one of Solimena's eight Theological Virtues, painted in fresco for the Church of Santa Maria di Donnalbina, Naples at the end of the 17th century. A bozzetto for Faith, with the same illusionistic niche behind the female figure, is in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena.1 The rest of the decorative project involved a cupola fresco of Paradise and the Vision of St. Benedict, as well as six large scenes from the Life of the Virgin on canvas for the church crossing. 1.
