Completely unknown until the mid-20th century, Foschi was one of the leading painters in 16th-century Florence. He trained with Andrea del Sarto and contributed to the decorative programs for the marriage of Cosimo I de’Medici and Eleanor of Toledo in 1539, and for the marriage of Francesco de’Medici and Johanna of Austria in 1565. In addition to religious and history painting, Foschi was also a skilled portraitist. The detailed treatment of a Dominican friar seen here has similarities with the male saints in one of his most important works, the altarpiece of the Disputation over the Immaculate Conception completed by 1550 for the Church of Santo Spirito.
