Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Lady'), London, Sotheby's, 6 December 1995, lot 229, where acquired.

Condition

The panel is uncradled and formed of two horizontal planks, which are supported on the reverse with a strip of canvas. This join is visible from the front under raking light. The paint surface is otherwise slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fairly minimal intervention - there are very few, tiny spots of retouching along the join, and small scattered spots of retouching in the sky and in some of the figures. More concentrated areas of retouching are found in the lower right corner, along the upper half of the right margin, and either side of the centre of the upper margin. The majority of the composition would appear to remain largely untouched however, and the painting is in good condition.

Claes Molenaer became a member of the Haarlem guild of Saint Luke in 1651. Previously thought to have been the brother of Jan Miense Molenaer, it now seems certain that the artists were not related, although they did know each other. In his landscapes, Claes was heavily influenced by Salomon and Jacob van Ruisdael and Jan van Goyen, and the present painting has a distinct Haarlem flavour.
