A portrait, still life, landscape and interior scenes painter, Firmin Baes was an excellent draughtsman, using as well pencil, charcoal or pastel. He liked drawing on large sized sheets, as shows The Spinner. In his first manner he privileged oil paintings and large charcoal  drawings. Later he used mainly pastel.
