A George III mahogany and upholstered side chair, circa 1765, attributed to Thomas Chippendale
with an arched upholstered back and conformingly shaped seat on turned and fluted tapering legs with lappeted collars and spreading reeded feet, inscribed to the rail in pencil 'Chamber/14 98' and in paint with inventory '884'

Thomas Chippendale supplied a set of four stools to Sir Edward Knatchbull for the Dining Room at Mersham-le-Hatch, Kent1. Originally covered in leather they have an almost identical fluted leg to the present side chair.
